In response to the scandal, the government has taken swift action. On Tuesday, the Equatorial Guinea Press and Information Office announced that it was suspending officials involved in the incident.
Furthermore, the government has ordered the installation of surveillance cameras in courts and ministries to prevent future “indecent and illicit acts.”
On Tuesday, Vice President Teodoro Mangue stated that any official caught engaging in sex acts at work would be sanctioned, calling it a “flagrant violation of the code of conduct.”
The government explained that these decisions were made in response to the widely circulated videos that had “denigrated the image of the country.”
The statement continued, outlining the measures taken: the suspension of officials featured in the homemade adult videos circulating on networks, severe actions against members tasked with inmate surveillance for failing to perform their duties and allowing such acts, and the enhancement of security across all judicial offices in the country. Additionally, surveillance cameras will be installed in both judicial and ministerial offices.
“The Executive has made this decision in the wake of the sexual videos that have gone viral on social media in recent days, which have denigrated the image of the country.
To address the inappropriate behaviour of certain officials within Equatorial Guinea’s public and judicial administration, the Vice President, concerned about the issue, has urgently called for a meeting with the President of the Supreme Court of Justice, the Attorney General, and several government members led by the Prime Minister. Their goal is to develop strategies to prevent such conduct and propose preventive measures.
The arrest of Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency in Equatorial Guinea, has caused a stir on social media. He is accused of recording over 400 sex tapes featuring the wives of prominent individuals in the country. The scandal surfaced during a fraud investigation involving the 54-year-old economist. A surprise search of his home and office by ANIF officials uncovered several CDs that later revealed his sexual encounters with numerous married women.
Since the sex tapes were leaked online, they have sparked widespread reactions, with the scandal being described as the largest of its kind in the country—and possibly Africa. The videos reportedly feature high-profile figures, including his brother’s wife, his cousin, the sister of the President of Equatorial Guinea, the wife of the Director-General of Police, and the wives of around 20 ministers in the country.
