Nigerian Soldiers Say ₦100,000 Monthly Salary Is Not Enough, Urge Tinubu to Fulfil Pay Rise Promise
The disclosure by Defence Minister Christopher Musa that Nigerian soldiers now earn a minimum monthly salary of ₦100,000 has sparked criticism from serving military personnel and veterans, who say the amount is inadequate given the country’s rising cost of living.
Retired and active soldiers argued that the current salary does not reflect the risks and sacrifices of military service. Some also questioned whether the new minimum wage is being fully implemented, while others accused the Federal Government of failing to deliver on President Bola Tinubu’s promise of a broader salary review announced in March 2026.
Speaking in a recent interview, Musa acknowledged that the military remains underfunded but said soldiers’ salaries had increased from ₦49,000 to ₦100,000. He also called for stricter penalties, including the death penalty, for convicted kidnappers and defended the military against allegations of poor feeding for troops.
Anonymous serving personnel said delayed implementation of the promised salary increase has hurt morale, contributed to personnel going AWOL, and made military recruitment less attractive. They urged the government to immediately implement the new salary structure, warning that poor welfare could weaken Nigeria’s security efforts.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu held a high-level security meeting with military chiefs, intelligence heads, and top security advisers at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to review the country’s security situation. The meeting followed recent military operations against terrorists and bandits in Zamfara, Katsina, and Borno states, though the Presidency did not release details of the discussions.
The debate over military welfare comes as Nigeria continues to face significant security challenges, with troops engaged in ongoing operations against terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping across several regions.
